Cabo Airport Nortel Switches

Situation:

A POE (Power over ethernet) switch had failed in the owner's house in Cabo. It needed replaced and none were available locally.

Task:

Get network back up and running before owner arrives, he will be there in 6 days.

Action:

I did everything possible to get the current POE switch working. I ordered a replacement plus a spare to be overnight. I ordered my plane ticket. The switches arrived the next day, had to remove “Made In China” stickers as Mexican authorities do not allow Made In China items. I packed two bags so I could put a switch in each one. I arrived at the Cabo airport, arrived at customs and the STOP/GO light went STOP on me. I explained I was replacing the switches in the owner's home. They wanted a declared value and a receipt. Even though I knew the value was around $3000, but knew that would raise a big red flag with them. I told them the switches were $200 each but I did not have a receipt. They said must have a receipt or we will confiscate. I quickly replied, If I can get a receipt sent to my phone, will that be ok? They replied Yes. I was made to stand at the end of the table till I received the email with the receipt. I called the owners administrative assistant and asked if she could send me a receipt for 2 POE switches with a value of $200. She said she would try to find it. I also called the vendor I received them from and requested the same. The administrative assistant said she could not find the receipt, the vendor sent me an email with the receipt I requested. Although the customs agent looked at the switch looked at me, smiled and said go ahead.

Result:

The switch was replaced everything was verified that is was working and as I walked out the gate the owner was coming in.
