Master Scorer

Situation:
|
I went to a USTA event (tumbling meet) for my daughter. She competed in her events, we then proceeded to receive her awards. Six hours later she received her awards. During the wait I noticed the entire process was manual.

Create a system and process to make results instant.

I proceeded to find out the calculations for scoring my daughter's events. I wrote a Microsoft Access database to enter, calculate and print scores. I tested it at an event and found that I had taken care of the events my daughter was in but not the rest of the events. Calculations started as adding two scores for two judges only, then added ability to allow for up to twenty scores and twenty judges, optionally throw out high/low score, optionally averaging scores, optionally add a difficulty score. I also realized that the data entry needed to be on separate low end DOS based computers with only floppy disks. I wrote the data entry program in Microsoft Visual Basic For DOS Version 1.0 which outputted clear text files to import into the Master Scorer database. After many test meets, I realized that having the low end computers at the main calculating desk was causing a bottleneck in the process. I moved the data entry to the judges tables, three to four events would run simultaneously. I used sneakernet to transfer the floppies to the calculations station. This made scoring almost instantaneous. I then worked with the USTA board on what else could the data be used for, they proceeded to say that the process before the event of splitting events into age groups, flights, no larger than 15-20 kids per flight, and a program that could be sold to parents, this was a very difficult and time consuming process. I then added this to the Master Scorer application.

The first meet the software was actually used was a huge success in my eyes, scores were posted on the awards wall before the kids made it to the awards room. This actually caused a problem as the main reason for the event was to generate money for the hosting team. By displaying scores so quickly, food and vendor sales were way down, another process change was added to manually check the scores with the judges scores sheets, this added 10-15 minutes to the process which made food and vendor sales increase, the Printed Program generated also added revenue for the hosting team. Parents and kids were much happier at events. The software did so well USTA recommended it to ALL teams to run events and it was the sole application for USTA Finals, US Junior Olympics used it for their Finals, and the software was also purchased by Walt Disney World Sports Complex in Florida. The software is still widely used today.
I am in the process of writting this application with micro services on the AWS cloud
