Walk The Belt - Docuload

Situation:

At Martin Engineering the Global Marketing / USA Marketing / Global Sales / USA Sales departments were all working on separate independent projects. After receiving the requests from each, I decided to get them all together and build one application rather than three. Their projects were Walk The Belt / Docuload / Martin Plus Data Manager. They wanted the system to be easy to use and produce a report at the end of the Walk and to provide the customer with all the issues/concerns and answers to solve their problems. It needed to have the ability to store all the manuals and documentation for each part on the system. It needed to save and export the data to each subsidiaries Customer Relationship Management System (4 different ones).

Task:

Research, design, develop and deploy a web based system for Walk The Belt.

Action:

Started with marketing to define the inputs and outputs for the system. They provided pencil and paper documents along with a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet with option drop downs for each field. I investigated other software that may work and found a roofing estimator iPad App and one of Martin’s dealers had created Docuload. Docuload had almost everything that was required by marketing/sales, except the web based option, it was written using Microsoft Access. Martin decided to purchase the software from the dealer for two reasons, add customers, eliminate competition and receive software rights. The Access database was reviewed for structure then redesigned in a mySql database. Manuals, Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), drawings, etc. were FTP’d to the website then links added to the database. I worked with an outside vendor to create the website in PHP. The system was created based on a tree structure that allowed any type of component to be added to any other type of component. i.e. a belt cleaner was documented, the drawing, manual and installation instructions were attached to the belt cleaner, the manufacturer was attached to the belt cleaner, a contact was attached to the manufacturer, etc. Purchased a utility to display AutoCad drawings via a web page.

Result:

The web site is up and working the way they requested. NOTE: After website was created they decided the system must be able to work offline, since most locations have no connectivity (underground mines, etc.). It was decided it needed to be an APP (iPad and Android). With the web based system up and running the offline access, APP requirements and specifications are completed, they have outsourced the project and it is still being worked on.
