Building a shop

Situation:

I had purchased 14 acres to build a shop and a home on.

Task:

Design, plan and build the shop.

Action:

It took 2 years of research and planning, including going back to Black Hawk College for classes on renewable energy. After the course I wanted to build with Autoclave Aerated Concrete (AAC). I went through the entire design process for the shop. When I got to the final stage of purchasing the AAC, the plant in Georgia closed, my next option was to get it from China or Mexico, which made it cost prohibitive. I then went to the backup plan of building a steel frame building with spray foam insulation. I contracted the well, concrete, plumbing, and radiant floor heat, the rest I would do myself with my family. On a Saturday of May 2011, I spent one day with 20 friends and family members to erect the steel frame. My son and I then constructed the rest of the building. I then started on the interior where I built a 1200 sq ft living space. Completed the final stages of construction, cabinets, tile, sinks, soffits and gutters in July 2012.

Result:

The result is that I have learned much patience and by walking around in the woods, learned to relieve my stress. The original completion date was May 1 2012, although I did not meet my own deadline, with the things I know now, it was a very hefty goal to finish by myself in one year, so completing in 1 yr and 2 months is great. I cannot wait to start working on the house, I will allot more time to the process and contracts will be written much stricter for vendors.
