Situation:

Existing network was slow and users could not access all printers. During storms I would always have strange network issues.
|

Task:

Review existing network infrastructure and decide possible fixes/alternatives.

Action:
|
I reviewed existing network infrastructure along with how servers, clients and printers were attached. Found 9 closets with 23 different manufacturers/models of 10MB hubs/switches connected via copper. One of the closets the copper was installed under the street to another building, (this was the storm problem). Servers, clients and printers were connected via IPX/SPX. The network had four segments, (this was the printer problem). Servers were accessible because they had four NIC cards, one for each segment. Reviewed a multitude of options, replacing just hubs/switches with switches or managed switches, using copper, using fiber, POE vs no POE, IPX/SPX vs TCP/IP. I determined the best option was to flatten the network out using TCP/IP 10.x.x.x network, later I had VLAN’s configured. Install fiber between the closets and Nortel/Avaya 10/100/1000MB 24 port POE switches with spares. With the documented downtime I collected from storms and speed issues, when I talked with the CFO, I had no problems justifying the upgrade. On Friday before cutover I notified all users that on Monday they would have printer issues, but I would have them resolved by the following Friday. On the weekend of the cut over I installed TCP/IP, I did not uninstall IPX/SPX for recovery reasons. Booted up all 150 machines and did a quick test on each. On Monday I had them all installed and running. By Monday afternoon all printer issues were resolved. I went back a month later and uninstalled IPX/SPX from all machines.

Result:

The network was now extremely fast. Since fiber was installed under the street, the storm issue went away. All users could access all printers. On Tuesday the President had an all employees meeting. He said it was the first time that what a geek had promised to him actually happened and he was proud of what was accomplished in one weekend.
