John Deere’s move to the Cloud

Situation:

John Deere’s move to the Cloud

Task:

We believe we have a need to move to the cloud. We need to research Cloud options.

Action:

I along with a team of 8 others across all parts of the IPN organization were assigned a research project. I started with asking what we do good/bad on premise, RackSpace, and CenturyLink. We then took that list and added in Cloud Providers for Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, IBM Softlayer, and CenturyLink Cloud (different than current). I personally created accounts on AWS and Azure to test and understand the cloud better. I went on multiple trips to Seattle and Urbandale for presentations with each vendor. We had to learn the new Cloud terms/products and how each company used/provided them to their customers. As a group we collaborated together decide the best option for John Deere and selected Amazon Web Services (AWS). I was then deeply involved with the negotiation of the contract with AWS, Evident.io (compliance), and TrendMicro (antivirus). A term was then formed to move an ISG application to AWS. They had an aggressive timeline, first app in production in 3 months.

Result:

Not only did we meet the deadline we had it LIVE EARLY! And at a significant cost savings over the fees at CenturyLink. Now 1 year and two months later my team and I have successfully moved multiple applications to AWS. We received the Global IT Innovation Award in December 2015. NOTE: There are significant challenges in moving an application to AWS if it is NOT cloud ready. Not all applications can or should be moved to the cloud.
